My career as an educator began in a rural, southern Ohio town on the Ohio River. My clinical experience as a student teacher in my small town was where my love for teaching began. I graduated from Shawnee State University with my B.S. in Middle Childhood Education with endorsements in science and social studies. I moved to Seattle, Washington where I officially began my career at a newly opened public school. During my time as a middle school science educator for Seattle Public Schools, I served on science curriculum revision and hiring committees to serve the diverse population of students there. I had more than 15 countries represented by my 160 students in the first year of teaching which further developed my belief in the power of diversity. I worked to revise the curriculum adopted by the district to ensure that it was equitable and relatable to my students.
I moved to Houston in the summer of 2019 and, little did I know, it would be a transformational career move. I began working for Sheldon ISD as a 7th/8th Grade STEM Social Studies Educator. In this role, I developed project-based learning experiences to teach social studies concepts; a new way of doing social studies within the context of STEM education.
I obtained my master’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in Curriculum and Instruction with Emphasis in Literacy Studies during the fall of 2022. This degree prepared me to meet the ever-growing demands of literacy education within all academic levels and contents.
In my current role as our Campus Instructional Specialist for science, I work with our 6-8 science team to enhance their instruction through professional learning, collaborative planning, and instructional coaching. I also have the privilege to coach the mighty KMS Cheerleaders alongside head coach, Chaniah Orphey. I love being a part of the Sheldon Community and the King Middle School family. Go Panthers!
